Kinetic Electrical delivered the electrical installation and commissioning for six containerised water treatment plants serving small communities across Hawke’s Bay.

Developed by FILTEC for Hastings District Council, the plants were designed to improve the safety, capacity and resilience of local drinking water supplies.

Responding to a critical community need

The 2016 Havelock North water crisis highlighted the vulnerability of New Zealand’s drinking water infrastructure.

Following the crisis and subsequent Government Inquiry, Hastings District Council developed plans to strengthen drinking water supplies across its smaller communities. Some existing sites and water sources were upgraded, while other communities received new water sources and treatment sites.

Six treatment plants, different requirements

FILTEC designed, installed and commissioned six water treatment plants, each constructed within a modified 40-foot shipping container.

The plants treat bore water of varying quality, with capacities ranging from 9m³ per hour to 180m³ per hour. Although the size and treatment process differed between locations, every plant incorporated UV disinfection and chlorination to support the delivery of safe drinking water.

Each container also included a dedicated motor control centre room to house the electrical and control equipment required to operate the treatment process.

Electrical delivery across multiple locations

Kinetic Electrical completed the electrical installation and commissioning for all six plants.

The work was delivered in coordination with FILTEC, beginning at its Auckland facility and continuing across the individual treatment plant sites in Hawke’s Bay.

This approach required close collaboration across each stage of the project to ensure the electrical systems were correctly integrated with the treatment equipment before the plants entered operation.

Supporting essential water infrastructure

The project demonstrates Kinetic Electrical’s ability to coordinate specialist electrical work across multiple water treatment sites, each with different capacity and process requirements.

Kinetic continues to work alongside FILTEC on water and wastewater treatment projects throughout New Zealand, providing electrical expertise for infrastructure that communities rely on every day.
