Kinetic Electrical Wellington helped deliver 29 new Kāinga Ora homes and shared community spaces at Hindmarsh Street in Johnsonville.

Working across a challenging site and mixed construction programme, the six-person Kinetic team managed the complete electrical package, from design support and switchboard manufacturing through to the final home fit-outs.

More homes for the Johnsonville community

The new development replaced seven older properties with 29 warm, modern homes, along with a community room, children’s playground and outdoor area.

The development combines 18 two-bedroom apartments manufactured offsite with larger three, four and five-bedroom homes constructed using traditional onsite methods.

This combination helped reduce material waste and construction time while providing a wider mix of homes for local families and individuals.

Complete electrical delivery

Kinetic Electrical Wellington was responsible for the electrical disciplines across the development.

The extensive scope included:

  • Electrical design support and installation

  • Residential electrical fit-outs

  • Air conditioning

  • Data and communications

  • MATV systems

  • CCTV and security

  • Door access and intercoms

  • Type 5 fire-protection systems

  • Street lighting

The project’s main switchboards had specific requirements and were designed and manufactured by Kinetic Electrical, providing greater control across both the design and installation stages.

Coordinating a complex development

The Hindmarsh Street site presented several construction challenges, including restricted access, extensive civil works and multiple building-platform levels.

Combining modular and traditional construction methods also required careful sequencing across different parts of the site.

The Kinetic team worked closely with the wider project team, helping shape the build programme, identify efficiencies and resolve issues as work progressed.

Building capability through experience

The scale and complexity of the development provided valuable hands-on experience for Kinetic Electrical Wellington’s apprentices and wider team.

It strengthened the business’s capability and confidence across multi-residential projects requiring electrical design, commercial switchboard manufacturing and the coordination of multiple specialist systems.

The completed development now provides 29 modern homes for the Johnsonville community, supported by carefully planned electrical infrastructure throughout.
