Kinetic Electrical delivered a custom 4000A generator main switchboard to support the continuity of essential power at Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
Designed for a critical operating environment, the system coordinates multiple generators, manages the hospital’s backup power supply and enables individual circuit breakers to be replaced quickly if a fault occurs.
Managing multiple generator supplies
The main switchboard receives power from five incoming generators, each rated up to 825kVA, feeding a common 4000A main bus.
An onboard control system manages the starting and stopping of the generators and synchronises them before they are connected. This coordinated approach allows the generators to operate together safely and reliably when backup power is required.

Maintaining power during an outage
The switchboard includes 15 outgoing motorised circuit breakers controlled by the onboard system.
During a power outage, the system manages the outgoing supplies to help maintain power across the hospital. It also supports load shedding, allowing selected loads to be managed when required to protect the stability of the wider system.
Designed for faster fault response
Each outgoing circuit breaker uses plug-in technology. If an individual breaker develops a fault, it can be removed and replaced within minutes, reducing the time required to restore that part of the system.
This provides an important operational advantage in an environment where dependable electrical infrastructure and the ability to respond quickly are critical.
