How Kinetic gave Lachie Moore the confidence and support to turn a long-held goal into a growing Southland electrical business.

For Lachie Moore, business ownership was always part of the plan.

Growing up in Southland, Lachie began his electrical apprenticeship in 2012 and built experience across residential, commercial, industrial and rural work. While he enjoyed the variety, it was rural electrical work and the farming sector that particularly appealed to him.

He was comfortable working hard and getting his hands dirty. The bigger question was how to turn that experience into a business of his own.

Finding the right way forward

Lachie knew he wanted to become a business owner, but there was more than one possible path.

He considered buying an established electrical company with an existing reputation. He also considered starting independently and building everything himself.

“Becoming a business owner was always the plan for me, one way or another.”

While weighing up his options, Lachie repeatedly noticed Kinetic Electrical advertising. The opportunity caught his attention, but he didn’t make the decision immediately.

“I was sceptical at first, to be honest,” he says.

Rather than rushing in, Lachie researched different business models, asked questions and compared the support available. The more he understood about Kinetic, the more compelling the opportunity became.

The confidence to take the leap

Lachie contacted Kinetic and began working through what joining the network would involve.

Open communication and the opportunity to meet directly with the Kinetic team gave him confidence in both the people and the model. It also allowed him and his partner to understand the practical realities of starting the business.

Kinetic offered more than a name and a logo. It provided support with business setup, budgets, goals and the systems needed to begin operating professionally.

For Lachie, that backing supplied the final piece he needed to move forward.

“It gave me that final piece of confidence and backup to convince me to take the leap.”

Instead of spending his first months building every process from scratch, Lachie could focus on serving customers, developing local relationships and building a strong business across Southland.

Starting locally, with more behind him

Like many trade businesses, Kinetic Electrical South began modestly, with Lachie working from his garage.

The early months were busy. Lachie was learning how to run a new business while continuing to deliver the work and balancing the responsibilities of a young family.

Having an established network behind him made that transition considerably easier.

The Kinetic name helped the new business enter the market with credibility, while the wider network provided people, resources and support Lachie could turn to when needed.

“For both me and my partner, the support has been second to none.”

That support extended beyond the technical side of running an electrical company. Lachie had experienced business owners to speak with, established systems to work from and a network that understood the realities of building a trade business.

From the garage to a growing operation

By early 2024, Kinetic Electrical South had grown from Lachie working alone into a six-person business operating from its own commercial office and workshop.

Its capabilities had also expanded.

Today, the business supports customers across Gore, Southland and surrounding districts with residential, commercial, rural and industrial electrical services. Its work ranges from new homes, renovations and heating to dairy sheds, irrigation, automation, processing and plant maintenance.

The business has also developed a specialised heating, ventilation and air conditioning division, delivering heat pumps, ducted systems, ventilation and tailored temperature-control solutions for homes and light-commercial properties.

This wider capability allows Lachie and his team to support more customers while remaining grounded in the local relationships on which the business was built.

A business shaped for Southland

Lachie’s experience across the farming and rural sectors remains an important part of the business.

Working in Southland means understanding the needs of farms, homes, local businesses and industrial operators, along with the importance of practical advice and dependable service.

Kinetic Electrical South combines that local understanding with the strength of a wider national network. Customers work directly with a local owner and team, while the business benefits from shared knowledge, established systems and broader industry relationships.

Through Kinetic’s partnership with Level Group New Zealand, the business remains locally owned and proudly Kinetic, with even more support available behind the scenes.

More than a business name

For Lachie, Kinetic provided a practical way to turn his ambition into action.

He still had to take the risk, put in the work and build the local reputation. But he didn’t have to begin with a blank page or solve every challenge alone.

What started in a garage has become an established Southland electrical business with its own team, premises and growing range of capabilities.

The biggest difference is that Lachie has been able to build his own business while remaining connected to something larger.
