Better connected from day one
How Kinetic gave Sam Orbell the systems, support and network to turn 13 years of electrical experience into a Wānaka business of his own.
When Sam Orbell decided to start his own electrical business, experience wasn’t the issue.
He had already spent around 13 years in the industry, working with respected construction companies across residential and commercial projects. His experience included residential builds valued from $500,000 to more than $5 million.
Sam knew the work. What he needed was a smarter way to build the business around it.
An idea that needed the right sounding board
By late 2017, Sam had made up his mind that he wanted to go out on his own.
Starting a business in a smaller community presented a particular challenge. Sam wanted someone experienced to test his thinking with, but discussing his plans locally felt difficult while he was still employed.
He reached out to Steve Law from Kinetic Electrical Rodney, whom he had worked with previously. That conversation introduced Sam to the wider Kinetic team and gave him a trusted place to begin exploring the opportunity.
Kinetic didn’t push him into a quick decision. Sam was able to work through the agreement, understand the model and properly assess what the network could offer.
That open process gave him confidence in both the opportunity and the people behind it.
Starting with the essentials already covered
Setting up an electrical business involves much more than registering a company and finding the first customer.
There are quotes to prepare, invoices to send, accounts to manage and systems to establish. Then there are uniforms, signage, marketing, supplier relationships and the daily demands of delivering the work.
Once Sam committed to Kinetic, support came from across the network.
He received help preparing quotes and lighting plans, establishing accounting and business systems, organising uniforms and signage, and beginning to market the new business professionally.
Rather than spending his first months creating every process from scratch, Sam could begin with established systems and people available to help him use them.
That support gave Kinetic Electrical Wanaka a professional foundation from the outset, while allowing Sam to focus on building relationships with local customers and construction businesses.
Credibility from the beginning
For Sam, the Kinetic brand helped communicate that his new business was serious, capable and properly supported.
Prospective customers could see a complete and professional business rather than a sole electrician trying to assemble everything as he went.
Builders also valued knowing Sam had proven systems and a wider network behind him. That support gave them greater confidence in the business’s ability to manage larger and more complex projects.
The brand opened the door, but Sam and his team still had to earn their local reputation through the quality of their work, communication and service.

From one electrician to a local team
By early 2024, Kinetic Electrical Wanaka had grown from Sam working alone into a five-person operation.
The business now supports homeowners, builders and businesses across Wānaka, Cromwell, Luggate, Lake Hāwea, Cardrona and surrounding areas.
Its services include residential and commercial electrical work, new homes and high-end builds, renovations, heating and ventilation, fault finding, maintenance and electrical upgrades.
Sam’s earlier experience with high-value residential construction remains particularly relevant in a region known for architecturally designed homes and significant building projects.
The business can provide the local knowledge and direct relationships customers expect, supported by the systems and broader capabilities of a national network.
What a network looks like in practice
The value of the Kinetic network extends beyond advice and business systems.
One example saw the Wānaka, Gore and Hawke’s Bay businesses work together on a major apple-processing facility in Central Otago.
The project involved upgrading the site’s electrical infrastructure, including its transformer, mains, switchboards and submains distribution. The upgrade increased capacity from 500 to 1,600 amps to support new grading and packaging equipment.
It demonstrated what independently owned Kinetic businesses can achieve when they combine their local knowledge, specialist capability and resources.
For Sam, access to other business owners also means having people he can call to discuss an idea, work through a challenge or learn from experience gained elsewhere in the network.
“Having others you can contact and discuss ideas with is key to moving your business in the right direction.”
That ability to share knowledge is particularly valuable when running a business in a smaller market. Sam remains in control of his local company, but he is not making every decision in isolation.
Local ownership with more behind it
Kinetic Electrical Wanaka remains locally owned and led by Sam.
Customers continue to deal directly with a local team that understands the region, its builders and the demands of electrical work in Wānaka and Central Otago.
Through Kinetic’s partnership with Level Group New Zealand, Sam now has even more support available behind the scenes, including stronger systems, wider industry relationships and connection to a broader trade-business network.
The business remains proudly Kinetic, while gaining greater capacity to learn, improve and pursue new opportunities.
Moving the business in the right direction
Sam’s story is not simply about starting an electrical company. It is about recognising where support could make him a stronger business owner.
He brought the trade experience, local relationships and ambition. Kinetic supplied the systems, professional foundation and network to help him turn those strengths into an established business.
What began with a private conversation and a carefully considered decision has become a growing local team serving Wānaka and the wider Central Otago region.
Sam still owns the business and shapes its future. He simply has more behind him as he does it.
