How Kinetic helped Mark James turn years of industry experience into a business of his own.
For Mark James, the idea of owning an electrical business didn’t arrive overnight.
He had more than 10 years of trade experience across Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast, including five years working as a contracts manager. He had managed everything from new homes and renovations to rest homes, hospitality venues and commercial fit-outs.
Mark enjoyed the security of employment, but the idea of building something for himself kept returning.
“I started researching what I would need to start a business and weighing up the value of becoming my own boss,” he says.
Finding a smarter way to start
Starting an electrical business from scratch meant more than finding customers and completing the work. Mark would also need a brand, business systems, accounting software, marketing materials, health and safety processes and ongoing support.
While researching his options, he came across a Kinetic Electrical advertisement on Facebook.
The established brand caught his attention, as did the opportunity to operate within his own defined region. At the time, Kinetic didn’t have a business covering Kāpiti, which made the opportunity even more compelling.
Mark made the initial enquiry and met with the Kinetic team soon afterwards. He was able to ask questions, understand the model and work through the decision without pressure.
The reassurance of having proven systems and experienced people behind him helped make the step from employee to business owner feel achievable.
Ready to get on with the work
Mark launched Kinetic Electrical Kāpiti Coast in February 2018.
From the beginning, Kinetic provided the foundations needed to operate professionally, including branding, marketing, social media, signage, business stationery and accounting systems.
For Mark, this meant he didn’t need to create every part of the business himself before he could begin.
“I don’t think I could have done it without the Kinetic business model.”
With the essential systems already in place, Mark could focus on delivering quality work, building local relationships and establishing the Kinetic name across the region.
From one electrician to an established local team
The business began with Mark working alone from his garage.
By early 2024, it had grown into a six-person operation with its own commercial office and workshop. Today, Kinetic Electrical Kāpiti Horowhenua supports homeowners, builders, businesses and workplaces across Kāpiti, Horowhenua and the greater Wellington region.
Its capabilities have grown with the business. The team now delivers residential, commercial and industrial electrical work, along with heating, ventilation, service and maintenance.
That progression can be seen in the scale of its recent projects. The team recently completed the planning, design and in-house build of a main switchboard for a commercial complex. The infrastructure will distribute power across multiple commercial buildings and support a future 330kW solar array.
It’s a long way from Mark’s first days working out of the garage.
Local ownership with more behind it
Mark believes the combination of local ownership and national backing has been an important part of the business’s growth.
Customers work directly with a local team that understands the region, while the business benefits from an established brand, wider industry relationships, shared knowledge and the support of other Kinetic owners.
That credibility has helped Mark build a strong local reputation. As of August 2026, Kinetic Electrical Kāpiti Horowhenua holds a 4.9-star rating from more than 50 Google reviews, with customers regularly recognising the team’s communication, professionalism and quality workmanship.
The network also gives Mark people to call when he wants to discuss a project, solve a challenge or learn from the experience of another business owner.
Now, through Kinetic’s partnership with Level Group New Zealand, the business remains locally owned and proudly Kinetic, with even more support available behind the scenes.
Building what comes next
Mark’s story shows what can happen when strong trade experience is combined with the right business foundation.
He still owns and leads his local business. He still makes the decisions and builds the relationships that matter in his region. But he hasn’t had to do it alone.
What began as an idea Mark couldn’t shake has become an established electrical business, a growing team and a platform for even bigger opportunities.
